Why It’s a Hidden Paradise


If you are dreaming of sun-drenched prairies, massive rustic old barns, and sprawling waterfront views of Lake Austin, Commons Ford Ranch Metropolitan Park is an absolute dream. Located in Westlake just outside the city, it offers incredible diversity for portraits. It features old wooden fences that create stunning leading lines, giant shaded oak canopy trails, and fields of tall natural grasses that provide a soft, neutral canvas for your family's connection.

What to Expect & Best Time of Day


To achieve that warm, glowing look you see throughout my work, the best time to shoot here is strictly during Golden Hour (the hour right before sunset). The evening light filters beautifully through the wheat grass, creating a breathtaking backlit glow.The park is highly versatile but does require a bit of walking. The walk from the parking lot to the open fields takes about 5 to 8 minutes through a beautiful tree canopy, making it relatively flat and highly manageable for toddlers. However, if you wish to extend your session down to the picturesque stone stairs and lake dock, expect a longer hike. 

Parking & Logistics (The Practical Stuff)


Planning an stress-free session means knowing the logistics before you ever buckle the kids into the car. Here is exactly what you need to know about Commons Ford Ranch:


  • Where to Park: There is a dedicated, spacious gravel parking lot conveniently located right inside the main gated park entrance at 614 N Commons Ford Rd. Admission is completely free! Note that during major holiday weekends (like Memorial Day or July 4th), park rangers strictly regulate the lot capacity, so parking along the outside road is not permitted.


  • Restrooms: Amenities are limited here. There is only a single portable toilet (porta-potty) located up the hill near the end of the entry path. Because there are no large public restrooms or changing pavilions, I highly recommend arriving fully dressed and ready for your shoot.


  • Permit Fees: Unlike many high-end Austin parks that charge steep portrait photography fees, there is currently no permit required to shoot personal family or engagement sessions here.


  • Pro-Tips for Families: Bring a wagon to haul extra gear, snacks, or a change of kids' shoes. Because it is a natural, rustic preserve, definitely pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a quick can of bug spray to keep everyone happy and comfortable.
